Schall is a prolific writer who in 2012 retired from teaching after over thirty years as a professor of political philosophy at Georgetown University. In this book, Schall delivers on his lengthy but descriptive subtitle: “Selected Contrary Essays on How Finally to Acquire an Education While Still in College or Anywhere Else: Containing Some Belated Advise about How to Employ Your Leisure Time When Ultimate Questions Remain Perplexing in Spite of Your Highest Earned Academic Degree, Together with Sundry Book Lists Nowhere Else in Captivity to Be Found.” Schall identifies problems in today’s educational system (including with what is and what is not read), recommends books that propose the sort of great questions that foster true learning, and comments on the spiritual journey of learning. Although written in 1988, Another Sort of Learning’s wisdom is perennial.
