Cheers:
Beating Michigan – For the past three years the Wolverines have broken the hearts of the Irish, often stealing victory in dramatic fashion. Bolstered by a stifling defense, ND finally won in a defensive, turnover-filled game.

Gangnam Style – I  can’t explain it and neither can you, but this smash hit pop song and video by Korean artist PSY is sweeping campus and appeals particularly strongly to our editor-in-chief. Rumor has it he’s fine-tuning the dance, and plans to debut it sometime in the near future…

Autumn – Cooler weather, alternating between shaking down the thunder and waking up the echoes, and the changing of the leaves – if any season is quintessential to Notre Dame, this is it. Love thee Notre Dame.

Jeers:
Getting mauled by tigers –To be clear, being mauled by any large carnivore is never fun, and usually is no fault of the maul-ee. However, for a New York man who found himself in a tiger’s enclosure in the zoo, the interaction was deliberate. Reports are that he intentionally jumped into the pen in an effort “to be one” with the beast. Shockingly, the man will survive. Better lucky than…sane?

Attempted censorship and political correctness – Jose Antonio Vargas, a former Washington Post journalist and self-described illegal immigrant himself, is seeking to remove the term “illegal immigrant” from media. Applying one’s effort towards a reasonable solution to the complex and nuanced issue of immigration in this country might be more constructive, but aren’t games of semantics more fun?

Overreacting to cartoons – This seems to occur every so often: a cartoon or video mocks a certain religious figure and members of the affiliated religious group riot violently. This happened recently in Libya, and a US ambassador was brutally killed during a raid on the consulate. Others have said this before, but it bears repeating: attempting to protest a stereotype of violence by reacting with more violence is generally not effective. (Mickey Mouse was not the source of controversy.)
