Published in 1948 by the famous Trappist monk, the book’s title refers to the mountain of Purgatory in Dante’s Divine Comedy. Hailed as a 20th-century counterpart to Augustine’s Confessions, Merton’s recounting of his youth and his conversion experience belongs to the annals of classic spiritual autobiographies.
