Year of Faith: October 11 began the Year of Faith, according to Pope Benedict XVI. It is the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world.” Catholics hope to find a deeper relationship with Christ this year as many people have neglected their faith throughout the world.
October Break: The break occurred in the middle of two dramatic football victories against Stanford and BYU. For many, the break was fantastic and exciting. For others it was relaxing. No matter, most of us were not studying in either case, but we return now, refreshed, to finish up this fall semester of 2012.
Seven New Saints: The first Native American saint and 6 others were honored in Rome yesterday morning. We laud these Catholic role models. Pope Benedict honored the saints’ efforts in continuing the Church’s mission to proclaim the gospel to the whole world.
Waste-Free Wednesdays: November 7 marks the first day of this fall’s campaign! Clear your tray between 6 pm and 7 pm at either dining hall and be entered into a raffle to receive $100 Flex Points. Why join the fun? Notre Dame students waste about 1.2 tons of food each day- think of how many people this could feed! Love food, don’t waste.

Candy Crowley: While Candy Crowley seemed more forceful than Jim Lehrer during the debate, Barack Obama spoke for four minutes more than Romney, again. But more importantly, Ms. Crowley also live fact-checked Romney’s assertion regarding Obama’s statements the day after the Libya attack. She admitted that night she was incorrect to side with Obama, but the damage had been done.
DeBartolo Quad Gas Leak: On Monday, DeBartolo Quad was surrounded with yellow tape and numerous authority figures who vehemently denied access to one of the most foot traffic-heavy spaces on campus. Apparently a tent stake punctured an unmarked gas line on the quad. Nice.
Meningitis Outbreak: A recent fungal meningitis outbreak has claimed 23 lives and 300 others have become ill as a result of tainted steroid injections. This story becomes even more alarming, considering the fact that the pharmacy responsible has escaped harsh punishment several times in recent years. One of the violations involves inadequate sterilization methods.
