Women take first, men take second at Shamrock Invitational

 

The Notre Dame Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams competed in the 18th annual Shamrock Invitational during the last weekend in January.  The women’s team topped both the Iowa and Incarnate Word women’s teams.  They won 17 events and had 15 runner-up finishes. The men finished second to Iowa, claiming victory over Incarnate Word and Missouri State.  The teams broke a combined 6 pool records over the weekend, and honored the senior student-athletes at a ceremony Saturday evening.

Men’s 800 free relay team Hughes, Kelly, Murphy and Hudspith won the 800 free relay and broke their own pool record with a time of 6:35.03.  Breaststroker Zachary Stephens finished a close second in the 100 breast, out touched by Trussov of Iowa by 0.54 seconds.  Stephens finished second to Trussov in the 200 breast, and Cameron Miller took third and Patrick Olson fourth.

Senior John Nappi swam a 15:21.60 to break the 1,650 freestyle pool record by 7 seconds.  In the 200 butterfly, Jonathan Williamson finished second with a time of 1:50.07.  Sophomore diver Joseph Coumos took the three-meter diving event with a score of 377.50, followed by Nemetz and Wagner who finished second and fourth respectively.

Women’s breaststroker Emma Reaney set a pool record in the 200 breast of 2:09.11, lowering her own record from last January by 1.64 seconds.  Freshman Sherri McIntee and sophomore Danielle Margheret took second and third in the same event.  In the 200 backstroke Katie Miller took first with a time of 2:00.05 to place first and Catherine Galletti took second.

Sophomore Catherine Mulquin and Hannah Bowen took first and second in the 100 freestyle, while seniors Courtney Whyte, Bridgett Casey and Melissa Scott swept the 100 butterfly.  All 7 of the seniors swam in the 400 free relay, where the team of Reaney, Bradford, Galletti and Mulquin took first with a time of 3:22.03.

Another pool record was set by Galletti, Reaney, Whyte and Mulquin in the 200 medley relay, finishing at 1:40.33 to break Auburn’s record from 2011.  In the 100 butterfly, the Irish women claimed the first five places, with Catherine Galletti setting a new pool record of 53.35 seconds. Galleti also won the 100 backstroke, with Catherine Mulquin and Courtney Whyte taking second and third behind her.

In the 1-meter diving event, Allison Casareto claimed a victory of 321.50 points, with her teammates Lindsey Streepey and Emma Gaboury coming in second and third.  Notre Dame again swept the 200 freestyle, with sophomore Elizabeth House finishing first with a 1:50.72, followed by senior Suzanne Bessire and freshman Molly Tremble.

Emma Reaney again took first in the 100 breaststroke, and Margharet finished in second place. Bridgett Casey and Katie Miller finished in the top three in the 400 individual medley, finishing 4:21.56 for second place and 4:21.71 for third, respectively.  The women finished out the meet with a victory in the 800 freestyle relay, as team Bessire, Bradford, House and Reaney finished with 7:26.95 time.

The Men’s team won 293-75 against Incarnate Word, and 218-150 above Missouri State, finishing just 20 points behind Iowa at 195-175.  The Women’s team topped Incarnate word 292-62, and beat Iowa 282.5-87.5.  This past Saturday, both teams won against Cleveland State, and both are scheduled to compete in the ACC Championships at the end of February.
