Our free read this week is Walter J. Ciszek, S. J.’s He Leadeth Me: An Extraordinary Testament of Faith. Ciszek, a Polish-American Jesuit priest, served as a missionary in the Soviet Union during and after World War II until he was captured by the Soviets and held in labor camps for 23 years. Through prayer, Ciszek received the grace and strength necessary to survive the Gulag and accept all things—even the most inhuman treatment—as gifts of Divine Providence.
In this book, Ciszek not only recounts his experiences but contemplates the importance of utter reliance on God in all circumstances. As Ciszek asks, “What can ultimately trouble the soul that accepts every moment of every day as a gift from the hands of God and strives always to do his will?” Ciszek’s heroic example of faith has been the inspiration for countless Christians. His cause was opened for canonization in 1990 and he currently bears the title “Servant of God.”
