Traveling is a blast. Almost everyone will say that one of their favorite things to do is to zoom around the globe, experiencing new places and trying new things. However, all too often, people make rookie mistakes when it comes to preparing for travel. Overpacking, underpacking, or just bringing the wrong things can make or break a trip. As the resident Humor Guru in Exile, I have experienced a few of these mistakes myself. In order to stop you from stumbling down my path (trust me, you do a lot of stumbling when abroad), I have comprised this handy list of things to bring with you on any travel extravaganza:

  1. A hair dryer with the wrong plug: It is extremely important that you remember to bring a hairdryer with an American charging plug. Every hostel or hotel you stay in will have sockets that apply solely to American electronics, as we are the greatest country in the world, and all other countries have to follow our lead.

  2. Five pairs of jeans but only two pairs of underwear: Contrary to popular belief, you always need more jeans than underwear. Think about it: People do not see your underwear, but they see your jeans. That is why you need as many pairs as possible, so that your outfit is always on fire.

  3. Large, clunky electronics: Make sure you pack as many large, unwieldy electronic items as possible. The TSA is extremely lenient when it comes to not taking laptops out of your bag, and will certainly not stop you if you forget to do so.

  4. Important documents: Take all of your important documents in your hand. Once you have assembled all of the necessary paperwork, shove each individual piece as far down into your bag as possible. This is to make Customs more fun, as all Customs agents love people who spend extra time searching for their passport. Passengers behind you will also admire your packing skills, and may even compliment you on them.

  5. Fragile Shoes: Europe is renowned for its smooth, paved roads that are very forgiving to fragile shoes. Ladies, make sure to pack those five-inch heels. Men, make sure to bring your finest suede shoes. You certainly will not be needing to walk at a pace anything beyond a light stroll.

  6. A sense of wonder: Whatever you do, make sure to constantly compare things in Europe to things in America. Stopping periodically in the street is one way to show how much you appreciate your experience. Locals will admire your ability to slow down traffic and will be amazed by your witty comparisons.

With these tips in hand, you should be well on your way to preparing for the ultimate travel experience. Much love from abroad.
