evangelical-catholicismOur free read this week is George Weigel’s Evangelical Catholicism: Deep Reform in the 21st-Century Church. In this book, Weigel proposes that the Church, no longer defined by the 16th-century Counter-Reformation, is now marked by a new period of Evangelical Catholicism, a renewal springing from reform and example of leaders like Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Evangelical Catholicism, Weigel proposes, will call all people into the mission of confronting cultural challenges by proclaiming the Gospel.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, said of the book, “This sparkling read puts all the old Church-labels– liberal vs. conservative, progressive vs. traditionalist, pre- vs. post-Vatican II– in the shredder. Now there is only one valid adjective for all of us: evangelical! Simply put, this means we take our baptismal promises with the utmost seriousness. Like the Samaritan woman, we’ve met a man–Jesus–who has changed our lives.”
